Obsessive-compulsive disorder, OCD is a type of anxiety disorder in which a person has unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead him to engage in repetitive behaviors. A person affected with OCD may realize that his obsessions are not reasonable and may try to ignore or stop them, but he is driven to perform compulsive acts in an effort to ease his distress. OCD usually centers on themes which lead to ritualistic behavior that ultimately affects the person’s life. Obsessive compulsive disorder is characterized by obsessions and compulsions, such as obsessive, repetitive thoughts and compulsive behavior like counting, cleaning and hand washing. Children are also affected by the OCD, while as many as 1 in every 200 adults and children are affected with OCD. The children had multiple obsessions and compulsions, with a reported average of four compulsions present in each child. The children’s obsessions included fear of death whether it is of themselves or their loved ones, fear of catastrophic events and fear of contamination. The most noted obsession was hand repeated hand washing. There were two large noted differences by the researchers that younger children had less depression, compared to the adults, and younger children had a higher ratio of girls, whereas adults had a higher ratio of boys.
In severe cases children with OCD will find it hard to hide their obsessions and compulsions, and this can lead to teasing and ridicule from their classmates at school, and this will gave them mental stress and due to this their family members are also affected. 2% of the population has been recognized as sufferers of OCD, but who are really the true sufferers their family, friends, children even strangers are also affected by this disorder. The good news is that the earlier OCD is treated, the greater the chance of a quick and complete recovery.
