Every year, hundreds of babies and small children are injured or killed in car crashes as a result of not being properly secured in their baby car seats. It is imperative for parents and guardians to ensure that their children and babies are properly buckled in to their car seats, and that they use them correctly. The proper use of baby car seats helps keep your baby safe.
Bear in mind that all infants must be strapped into their car seats facing the rear until they are at least one year of age as well as weigh at least 25 pounds. Actually, the longer you can keep your baby facing the rear, the better off they will be. From the day you bring your newborn baby home from the hospital, you should begin having your baby ride in the car seat facing the rear. Once your baby is about one year of age and as long as they are over 25 pounds, they may begin riding in the car facing forward, still strapped in their car seat of course.
You should never, under any circumstances, hold your baby in your lap in a moving vehicle. This is extremely dangerous as it can cause serious injury or death to your baby, even though it’s common for parents to think their baby will be safe in their arms, however this is not true. A baby, or young toddler should be buckled into a secure car seat for the safest possible car ride.
